“No lack of talent, just lack of competitors”

"Wildcat swimmers lose to Shorecrest, 94-76 "

“Despite winning eight of 12 events Thursday, the Oak Harbor boys swim team continued to be plagued by not having enough competitors as the Wildcats lost to Shorecrest, 94-76. Oak Harbor (2-6 for the season) was only down 82-74 heading into the final race of the meet but took third and fourth place in the 400 freestyle relay.Oak Harbor swimmers took last place during 10 of the 11 races as the lack of depth on the bench was extremely evident. We just need to get more people in here on the team next year, said Oak Harbor coach Patrick Stewart. With a couple of people more we would finish a lot higher. We’ve lost a few meets by just a few points. Wildcat Brent Rivard continues to dominate in the 100 breaststroke, as he won the race by a full four seconds at 1:14.01. Despite the win Rivard doesn’t think that he is any closer to qualifying for state than he was a few weeks ago.I am hoping to go to districts and win that, said Rivard. If you get first or second place there you automatically go to state. Right now I am ranked No. 1 in our district.Oak Harbor’s Colbey Wiley also swam a strong meet, winning the 100 butterfly by defeating the next swimmer by almost six seconds, at 1:08.72 I am practicing a lot more and swimming in the morning, said Wiley. I think that is helping me improve.David Swoish of Oak Harbor continues to put together a strong year as he earned two individual victories, one in the 200 individual medley at 2:27.99 and the other in the 100 freestyle at 57.78. Despite the close losses this season the swimmers and Stewart are proud of the improvements the team have made over the one-win season of a year ago.We are doing a whole lot better, said Wiley. We are getting a lot of first places and we have a bigger team this year, so that helps a lot at the meets. They have more endurance, which really helps, said Stewart.Rivard says that the younger swimmers are working harder than ever, which gives him hope that the team can improve even more before the end of the season. Rivard acknowledges that the comradery of the team has helped every facet, including wins in relay events. They are starting to swim more as a team, said Stewart. Everybody is starting to come together.Shorecrest 94, Oak Harbor 76200 medley relay: Oak Harbor (Swoish, Wiley, Rivard, Ciminski) 2:03.50; 200 freestyle: Hunter (Oak Harbor) 2:14.90; 200 individual medley: Swoish (Oak Harbor) 2:27.99; 50 freestyle: Ciminski (Oak Harbor) 26.84; 100 butterfly: Wiley (Oak Harbor) 1:08.72; 100 freestyle-Swoish (Oak Harbor) 57.78; 500 freestyle: Thompson (Shorecrest) 5:59.01; 200 freestyle relay: Oak Harbor (Swoish, Hunter, Rivard, Ciminski) 1:51.46; 100 backstroke: Gregory (Shorecrest) 1:14.53; 100 breaststroke: Rivard (Oak Harbor) 1:14.01; 400 freestyle relay: Shorecrest (Jacobson, Gregory, Hogan, Thompson) 4:23.37.
