“For all their talent, the Coupeville girls basketball team lacks in one of the major categories in the sport: height. But what the girls lack in inches is made up in teamwork, and that was never more evident than Friday night when the Wolves took on Darrington and beat the Loggers 51-47. Darrington sported a 5-1 record coming into the game, but Coupeville started the night on a tear, mounting a 10-0 lead in the first that exploded into a 28-13 lead during the second quarter.“It was awesome, we were all so pumped up before the game because we knew we pretty much had to win this,” said Coupeville sophomore Brianne King. With a packed set of bleachers behind them the Loggers would not give up as they continuously battled back from deficit after deficit to get back within six just after the half. “We took the transition basket away and that is a big part of their offense,” said head coach Greg Oldham. “The other half of it was that we limited our turnovers. We just never strung two or three or four of them together.” The Wolves six point lead would hold until the third when King stole the ball on Darrington’s first possession of the fourth. With the Darrington player in her face, King streaked down the court. Not able to beat her opponent to the basket, King stopped abruptly while her opponent kept going and put in a layup for the score. Coupeville junior Tracy Taylor fallowed with a score of her own to bring the Wolves their biggest lead since the first half, 42-32.Darrington would not die quietly, though, as the Loggers mounted a comeback that included a a 10-3 run on the Wolves. After the smoke cleared the Loggers were within two points of the Wolves with less than 15 seconds left in the game.But a pair of free throws during the final seconds of the game by Coupeville sophomore Erica Lamb and junior Ashley Ellsworth-Bagby put the game out of reach.“I was a little nervous but I’m pretty confident when I shoot free throws,” said Ellsworth-Bagby, who was 5-of-6 from the line during the game. “My percentage is pretty high right now and they went in.” Lamb, who was everywhere on the court during the game, ended with six points. “Every game she has picked up her level of play a little more,” said Oldham. “She just hit two clutch free throws tonight and she has been working on that.” The Wolves as a team kept their cool from the line as they shot 12-for-15 for the game, while the Loggers were 13-for-19.Despite being outrebounded by the Loggers 37-26, the Wolves managed to get the boards when they needed them and stopped Darrington after their opponents grabbed a defensive rebound. King was second on the team in rebounds with seven, and also posted team highs in three-pointers, five, and points scored, 22.“She, like Ashley, does so many things that don’t show up in the box score,” said Oldham. “Brianne gets her hand on so many passes it makes the other team do things they may not want to.” One addition to the team before the game was Coupeville’s Vanessa Davis, a freshman who saw her first varsity action. At 5-foot-10 she was the tallest player on the court for Coupeville and pulled down a team-high eight boards.
