The Windjammer Park diamonds are getting a little extra attention, thanks to the North Whidbey Little League.

The league budgeted approximately $14,000 for the project, which includes three dugouts at Windjammer Park and the addition of roofs on two dugouts at Fort Nugent Park. Encinas Construction was hired for the job.

John Encinas estimates the old dugouts at least 30-years-old judging by the amount of rot in the wood.

Most of the construction is complete at Windjammer, but the new dugouts will need some finishing touches.

“We will still have to paint the dugouts which will probably be done by volunteer labor,” Kenneth Tyler, North Whidbey Little League president, said.

The major and minor Little League baseball teams, made up of boys and girls ages 6 to 12, play at the Windjammer Park fields.

An older baseball division for boys and girls 13 to 18 play at Fort Nugent Park on a full-size field, Tyler said.

“We will be adding roofs to both dugouts at Fort Nugent Park as soon as Windjammer is done,” he said.

Little League’s next capital project will likely be refurbishing the Fort Nugent fields, Tyler said.

Approximately 240 kids participated in the North Whidbey Little League baseball and softball programs during the 2008 season.
