Coming off a 7-0 shutout victory over Monroe on Monday, the Oak Harbor High School tennis team ran its WesCo North season record to 2-0 with a 4-3 victory over an always strong Lake Stevens squad Wednesday afternoon.
Prior to the beginning of the season head coach Horace Mells said the Wildcats would be strong in singles matches and they certainly are.
Against Monroe, only Ryan Evans in the second singles match went to three sets before defeating his opponent Cody Hastings 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.
The other three singles players, Derek Thomas, Jordan Kingma and Josh Evans, were all straight-set winners.
“We got lucky with Monroe,” Mells said. “With the short practice season, they had some of the regular players out of action because they didn’t participate in enough practice sessions. They should be stronger the next time we get together.”
Straight-set wins were the rule against the Bearcats in doubles matches with the teams of Paul Jewell and Max O’Dell, and Rick Baleros and David Marshall winning 6-1, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-2, respectively.
The third doubles team of Matthew Rice and Chris Holbrook completed the shutout with a three-game, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 victory.
Against Lake Stevens, all four singles players came through once again winning in straight sets.
Thomas defeated Ryan Herdt 6-1, 6-1 in first singles and Ryan Evans was a 6-3, 7-5 winner in second singles.
In third singles Kingma bested Derek Hahn 6-2, 6-2, and Josh Evans completed the singles sweep with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Nick Johnson.
