Mount Vernon took advantage of 17 walks to defeat the Oak Harbor Babe Ruth baseball team 13-7 at Clover Valley Park Thursday, May 30.

Mount Vernon took advantage of 17 walks to defeat the Oak Harbor Babe Ruth baseball team 13-7 at Clover Valley Park Thursday, May 30.

After falling behind 3-0, Oak Harbor scored three times in the bottom of the third to knot the score. Mount Vernon countered by scoring 10 runs over the next two innings to build a big lead and withstand an Oak Harbor comeback.

Oak Harbor’s three-run third was highlighted by a home run by Jordan Davenport, driving in Dillan Murphy who had singled. Trent Benson followed with a single and scored on Robert Herring’s double.

Down 13-3, Oak Harbor chipped away with single runs in the fifth and sixth and two in the seventh.

In the fifth, Davenport singled and scored.

Bailey singled in the sixth and scored on Paul Spence’s double.

In the seventh, Austin Hauter walked, Davenport singled and Trent Benson singled to produce two runs.

Oak Harbor out-hit Mount Vernon 12-10, including three doubles and a home run, but received only one walk.

Davenport led the offense with a home run and two singles. Chris Levy and Spence each had a double and single and Benson rapped two singles.

Oak Harbor hosts Stanwood in an 11 a.m. double header Saturday, June 1.
