A hat trick by JJ Mitchell led the Oak Harbor High School soccer team to a 4-2 win over Everett at Lincoln Field Monday, April 4, and pushed the Wildcats into the top half of the Wesco standings.

The Wildcats are now 2-1 in conference play (3-3-1 overall) and join four other one-loss teams behind 3-0 Glacier Peak.

Oak Harbor hopes to make it three-straight Wesco wins when it hosts Shorecrest (1-2, 2-3-2) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 6.

Everett defeated Arlington 5-1, a team the Wildcats nipped 2-1. So, Oak Harbor expected a close match with the Seagulls, according to coach Brian Thompson.

The Wildcats, however, “took over from the beginning,” Thompson said.

Mitchell scored midway through the first half, then with two minutes left before the break, Spencer Champion made it 2-0.

Mitchell scored with 29 and 17 minutes left in the match to push the lead to 4-0.

Everett scored two goals in a two minute span, the second coming with seven minutes remaining, against Oak Harbor reserves, according to Thompson.

“JJ was on fire,” Thompson said. “He played super well.”

Mitchell also won bragging rights over friend Gregor Byrne, the Seagulls’ star.

“Byre is a really good player,” Thompson said, “and we covered him closely.”

Eric Jensen, with help from Kyle Truex, handled the defensive duties on Byrne, Thompson said.

Overall, the Wildcats’ “defense played really well” and the offense “moved the ball,” Thompson said.
