Meadowdale pitcher Alyssa Reuble was nearly perfect as she led the Mavericks to a 5-0 win over the Oak Harbor High School fastpitch team at Hillcrest Elementary School Wednesday, March 28.

Reuble, a junior, fired a no-hitter, striking out 11 and walking none. The only blemish to her game was an error by her second baseman on Shawna Steele’s grounder leading off the fifth.

That same second baseman preserved Reuble’s no-hitter by making the defensive play of the game, snaring a Steele line drive with a leaping catch for the game’s final out.

Reuble’s effort overshadowed a fine pitching performance by Oak Harbor’s Emily Hunt.

The Mavs scored two in the first and one in the second on only one hard-hit ball, blooping in five singles against the hard-luck Hunt. Meadowdale (2-2, 2-3) scored two unearned runs off Hunt in the sixth.

Of Hunt, coach Jess Weikle said, “I am really proud of her, she did a really good job.”

Weikle was also happy were her team’s defense, which, other than the rocky sixth, made all the plays. Last year, Weikle said, when one error was made it would lead to “multiple errors and multiple runs.”

The Wildcats (0-4, 2-6) and Shorecest (0-1, 3-1) play at 4 p.m. Friday, March 30, at Hillcrest Elementary School.
