Malloy wins Miami tournament

Marti Malloy took a step toward the 2016 Olympic games by winning gold at the Miami Pan American Judo Open Aug. 1 and 2.

The Oak Harbor Olympian defeated USA teammate Hana Carmichael for the 57kg title.

The USA dominated the weight class, taking five of the top eight spots.

In all, the Americans won 11 golds, two silver and five bronze in the tournament, an Olympic qualifying event.

One hundred-seventy five athletes from 30 countries competed in Miami.

With the win, Malloy maintained her top USA ranking; she is ranked sixth in the world.
