The first-place Marysville-Pilchuck High School soccer team scored in the final minute to defeat injury-riddled Oak Harbor 2-1 Wednesday, May 7, in Marysville.

“We came in to this game still missing a lot of key players but played very well,” coach Brian Thompson said. “All of the players coming in off the bench did a good job, and the usual starters really picked up their game.”

Oak Harbor had high hopes coming into this season after a solid showing in the playoffs last year and the return of most of its lineup. That lineup, however, has been ravaged by injuries throughout the season and the Wildcats finished third in the Wesco North with a 4-9 record (6-9-1 overall).

Marysville-Pilchuck (8-5, 8-8) finished on top of the Wesco North. It’s only loss to a school from the North was to Oak Harbor 3-1 earlier this season.

Now, the Wildcats limp into the eight-team, double-elimination district tournament, which begins Saturday, May 10.

Oak Harbor faces Shorecrest at 6 p.m. at Shoreline Stadium.

The contest will be a rematch of last year’s first round when Oak Harbor upset the Scots. Shorecrest recovered and kept winning until it fell in the state championship game.

The Scots got a bit of revenge when it dumped Oak Harbor 8-0 during the regular season.

In Oak Harbor’s loss to Marysville-Pilchuck, the Wildcats scored first with a goal from Gavin Stewart.

Midway through the second half, the Tomahawks tied the match, and then they won it when Sebastian Navarro scored with about 30 seconds left, according to Thompson.
