The trip and the game were tough.

Delayed in traffic because of the I-5 bridge collapse in Burlington, the Oak Harbor Babe Ruth baseball team was an hour late for its game in Mount Vernon Tuesday, May 28. Once the contest started, the troubles continued as Oak Harbor fell 7-2 at the Skagit Valley College field.

Mount Vernon scored two runs in the second and third innings to take an early lead.

Three walks, a hit batter and a single led to two runs in the second inning, and then two singles, a double and two errors added two more runs in the third.

Oak Harbor got one run back in the fourth. With one out Chris Levy walked and Dominic Stevens singled. After another out, Robert Herring singled in Levy.

Mount Vernon continued to add to its lead with a pair of runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. An error, walk and double produced the two fifth-inning runs, and a walk and two errors plated the final MV run.

Oak Harbor finished the scoring with a run in the seventh. Herring walked, stole second and moved up twice on ground outs.

The two singles in the fourth by Stevens and Herring were Oak Harbor’s only hits.

Coach Bill Young said, “We again shot ourselves in the foot with leadoff walks or errors that resulted in four of Mount Vernon’s seven runs.”

Oak Harbor has a rematch at home with Mount Vernon at 6 p.m. Thursday at Clover Valley Park.
