Legion thumps Ferndale

Four runs in the bottom of the first inning was all the combined Oak Harbor/Coupeville Class A American Legion baseball team needed in Wednesday’s game to defeat Ferndale 10-0 and claim sole possession of first place in the league.

Entering the game, Oak Harbor/Coupeville had a 5-2 record and was tied with Ferndale for first place.

The Wildcats battered Ferndale pitcher Zach Rogers for 13 hits in the game which was called with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning on the 10-run rule.

Shea Weaver got things going for the Wildcats in the bottom of the first with a leadoff single and Josh Higbee followed with another single to put runners on first and second.

Austin Humphries then drove a Rogers offering to the base of the fence in right field over Corey Fuller’s head for a triple and the Wildcats were off and running.

Josh Fikse rolled out to third base to score Humphries with the third run of the inning.

Jason Bagby and Brad Farnum followed with back-to-back infield hits, and Bagby came home with the fourth run on a throwing error.

The Wildcats added a single run in the third inning and two more in the fourth on a J.D. Wilcox inside the park home run.

Wilcox also had the game-ending hit in the bottom of the fifth driving in Wade Burns with the Wildcats 10th run.

Fikse was the winning pitcher allowing only three hits while walking two and striking out two.

Wilcox, Higbee, Bagby, Farnum and Bennett Richter had two hits apiece for the Wildcats.
