Legion scores nailbiting victory

Thursday’s single A American Legion baseball game between the combined Oak Harbor/Coupeville team and Sedro-Woolley was an exciting one: A true nailbiter, ending in a 6-5 victory for the hometown lads.

The Wildcats staked the visiting Cubs to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning, but came roaring back with five runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead for good.

Sending 10 batters to the plate and collecting six hits, combined with a pair of stolen bases and an error, the Wildcats appeared on the verge of making the game a runaway after three innings of play.

However, things got a little tense after that.

Sedro-Woolley came back with a run in the top of the fourth to narrow the margin, but the Wildcats answered with what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the fourth.

Oak Harbor/Coupeville pitcher Josh Fiske went the distance and threw the ball well, managing to wiggle off the hook in the sixth and seventh innings.

Sedro-Woolley got the leadoff batter on in the top of the sixth and Kellen Enberg then lined a Fiske delivery back up the middle that appeared to be heading for centerfield, but the tall Wildcat right-hander made a great backhand catch of the liner and doubled the runner off first.

The crowd edged a little closer to the front of their seats with two out in the top of the seventh when Sedro-Woolley loaded the bases on a walk and a pair of infield errors.

Undaunted, Fiske bore down and struck out Andrew Barron to end the game.
