After an impressive 9-0 opening-round win over Stanwood, the Oak Harbor Legion AA team lost two straight and were ousted from the district tournament at the Skagit Dream Field in Mount Vernon over the weekend.

Bellingham slugged Oak Harbor 14-3 in five innings Saturday, July 17, then Anacortes sent the Wildcats packing with a 4-0 win Sunday.

Oak Harbor put together a solid all-around game in blanking Stanwood Friday. Gabe Clark pitched a two-hitter and was backed by an errorless defense. Offensively Oak Harbor had 10 hits, including three doubles.

The ‘Cats scored four in the third to start the win. Jay Stout led with a double and Yale Rosen reached on an error. After an out, Clark ripped a two-run single. Justin Counts walked and scored with Clark on an error off the bat of Spencer McBride.

Rosen’s double and another Stanwood error produced a single run in the fifth.

A four-run sixth sealed the game for Oak Harbor. Stout was hit by a pitch, Rosen singled and both scored on Josh Evans’ double off the wall. Clark’s single, Counts’ sacrifice fly and Ryan Byrne’s single netted two more runs.

Stout, Rosen, Evans, Clark and Byrne all went 2-for-3. Stout, Rosen and Evans doubled, and Evans and Clark each had two RBI.

Bellingham scored five runs in each of the second and third innings off 12 hits to roll by Oak Harbor in the second round.

Oak Harbor coach Tyson VanDam said, “Bellingham is a good hitting team and that is what happens when you get the ball elevated (up in the strike zone).”

The Wildcats scored first. Sam Wolfe led off the game with a two-base error and scored on Rosen’s single.

Oak Harbor scored again in the third when Stout tripled and scored on Rosen’s out.

Rosen doubled in the fifth and scored on David Tillotson’s hit to end the scoring.

Rosen finished 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Oak Harbor just couldn’t get its offense rolling in the elimination loss to Anacortes. Also, in the first two innings, Oak Harbor pitchers couldn’t find home plate. The Steamers scored single runs in the first and the second thanks yo seven walks and just one hit.

Anacortes added two runs in the top of the seventh.

The Wildcats had just five hits: a double by Stout and singles from Evans, Peter Franssen, Sam Glavick and Jack Richter.

Assessing the entire summer season, VanDam said, “I think we got better.” He specifically pointed out the improvement of catchers Glavick and Tillotson. He noted both were rusty early in the summer because senior Brad Farnum caught most of the innings during the high-school season.

VanDam added, “I thought our defense was getting better.”
