It took awhile, but once the Coupeville High School soccer team finally punched in a goal late in its contest with visiting Port Townsend Saturday, March 17, three others quickly followed in the Wolves’ 4-0 season-opening win.

Freshman Jeremy Copenhaver, playing in his first varsity match, scored off an assist from J.P. Ward in the 65th minute and from their the Coupeville offense took off.

Coach Paul Mendes said, “The first goal was the turning point of the match and opened up the game for us…We passed well right from the start and created good scoring chances throughout the game.”

While the offense was waiting to break through, Mendes said, “The defense played really well to earn the shutout and kept us in the game.”

Zach Forland paced the D by collecting the shutout in goal.

Six minutes after Copenhaver’s goal, Dylan Tack “used his speed to score two goals” in four minutes, Mendes said.

Ward earned a goal of his own in the 78th minute to finish the four-goals-in-13-minutes rush against the Redskins (1-1-1).

Mendes said ,”The result will serve as a good confidence builder to send us into league play.”

Coupeville (1-0) enters Cascade Conference play at 6 p.m.at Archbishop Murphy Tuesday, March 20.
