Playing well in two games was not enough as the Coupeville High School volleyball team lost 3-1 to visiting Lakewood Thursday, Oct. 4.
The Wolves (1-8, 2-8) dropped the first set 25-18, then rebounded to take the second 25-22. The Cougars won game three 25-14 and, although Coupeville put in a solid effort, took game four 25-23.
The Wolves’ leading player, Bessie Walstad, returned after a two-week injury and saw spot duty, recording five kills in only two games.
Coach Toni Crebbin said it was “nice to have her back in there.”
Bree Messner had “a nice offensive night,” according to Crebbin, recording 11 kills, six aces and 24 digs.
Sydney Aparicio had 19 digs and Megan Oakes 21 assists.
Next up is a trip to rival South Whidbey (2-6, 2-7) at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9.
Crebbin said, “A win against South Whidbey would put us in a tie with them. Finishing ahead of them in the league would give us a much better spot in the playoffs, so it should be a big night.”
