King’s got the win it needed, but Coupeville made sure it wasn’t easy.

The Knights nipped the Wolves 2-1 at Mickey Clark Field Monday, May 5, in the regular season finale.

King’s (10-3-1, 11-4-1) needed the win to finish ahead of South Whidbey (9-3-2, 11-3-2) in the final Cascade Conference standings to earn the top 1A seed and a home match in the first round of the district tournament.

Coupeville (4-9-1, 5-9-2) also qualified for the postseason and will travel to Mount Baker (5-10-1) at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, for a first-round, loser-out game.

King’s probably expected an easy time of it against the Wolves, having defeated Coupeville 5-1 earlier this season.

The Wolves, however, didn’t back down and shocked the Knights with an early goal from Abraham Leyva Elenes.

King’s recovered and eventually took the lead, battling through an inspired Coupeville defense.

“We played one of our most complete games,” coach Kyle Nelson said, “and played great defense the second half to keep it a close game.”

“(Goalkeeper) Joel Walstad had a fantastic game with many excellent saves,” he added.
