Oak Harbor posted two division winners in the Three Course Challenge at Camp Rilea in Seaside, Ore., Saturday.
The Wildcats’ Tyler King won the boys’ “hard” division and Adrianna Royal won the girls’ “moderate” race to earn the top performances for the Oak Harbor squads.
The Three Course Challenge featured 95 schools from Washington, Oregon, and California. In all 1,379 boys and 961 girls took part. Each school provided two runners for the 5,000 meter “easy” course, two runners for the 5,500 yard “moderate” course, and three runners for the 6,000 meter “hard” course.
The difficulty of the course wasn’t determined only by length, but also “challenges.” The “hard” course, for example, had sand hills, primitive trails, and a mud pit.
King won by two seconds on the most challenging course in 22:12.
Coach Eric Peterson said, “It was an exciting race” and that the leaders, including King, ran further because of a wrong turn.
Royal’s victory came in 24:33 on the moderate course.
The girls’ team finished second in Division I, which included 12 4A schools from Washington and 22 5A and 6A schools from Oregon.
Taylor Von Grey joined Royal on the moderate course and finished 52nd (28:40) out of 370 runners.
On the easy course, Jessica Denton took 17th (21:22) and Emily Bain 37th (22:48) out of 327. Najida Beronilla was 129th (25:49) as a nonscoring participant.
Allison Duvenez was 10th (26:56) on the hard course, Christina Wickers 63rd (29:55), and Ariel McCarter 82nd (30:27) out of 264.
Oak Harbor’s boys’ team finished seventh out of 19 teams in their division.
Matt Reith had the next best finish for an Oak Harbor runner, ninth (21:39) in the moderate race. Mitch Jackson was 99th (24:30) out of 473.
In the easy race, Matt Bolte picked up 44th (18:20) and Wyatt Homola 79th (19:12) out of 406.
