They may be small in stature, but Oak Harbor’s King of the Rock wrestling club came up big last weekend.
A group of 33 local grapplers, mostly between the ages of four to 14, captured 12th place at the Washington State Folkstyle Championship tournament in Edmonds, which featured over 1,600 competitors from around the state.
“There were at least 100 or so clubs out there,†KOTR coach Lee Miracle said.
The tournament contained eight classifications: pee-wee (ages 4-5), bantam (6-8), midget (8-10), novice (10-12), schoolboy/schoolgirl (12-14), cadet (14-16), junior (16-18) and open (18-plus).
Taking top honors among KOTR wrestlers was Josh Martinez, who not only pinned his way to the state title in the 70-pound school boy category, but also won the Most Outstanding Sportsmanship award.
Martinez defeated fellow teammate Brandon Strickland in the finals.
“It’s pretty rare to have two kids from the same club competing for the state championship,†Miracle said.
Strickland, who also had a strong tournament, received second.
Other top finishers for KOTR were 8-year-old Kayla Miracle in the 50-pound midget category and Jordan Martinez in the 45-pound bantam weight class. Both took second in their respective divisions.
Kayla Miracle lost her championship match to Colton Tracy 6-4, after beating him earlier in the tournament 4-2.
“If those two wrestled 10 times, they would probably go 5-5,†Lee Miracle said.
Jordan Martinez put up a tough fight in his title match, but eventually lost to an opponent who was top in a higher weight class and got bumped down a category after a bout with the flu.
“It was a tough break for Jordan,†Miracle said.
KOTR captured several other key wins.
Third place finishers included: Sam Davis (120-pound novice), Hunter Vail (105-pound novice), Mark Johnston (50-pound midget) and Mark Johnston (189-pound junior).
Fifth place finishers were Cody Fakkema (65-pound novice) and Colton Elliott (80-pound schoolboy).
This was just the first year of wrestling for Fakkema.
“That’s pretty incredible,†Miracle said. “He’s just a natural.â€
Dillon Jahrling took sixth in the 130-pound schoolboy division.
Overall, Lee Miracle was pleased with what he saw from his wrestlers, but he is already looking ahead to the next folkstyle season.
“We have a goal as a team to place in the top four in the state next year,†he said.
KOTR is now set to enter freestyle wrestling. Those interested in signing up for the season that runs February through April should drop by the Oak Harbor High School mat room on Feb. 8 or Feb. 10. For more information call Lee Miracle at 929-6356.
