Mac Kerfoot has a flair for the dramatic.

Oak Harbor High School’s Kerfoot, for the second consecutive year, had to win a playoff at district Tuesday, May 20, to secure a spot in the boys state golf tournament.

District 1 is allocated 14 slots into the state tournament, and Kerfoot and Marysville Getchell’s Gage St. John were tied for the last berth after two days of play at the Everett Golf and Country Club.

St. John held a four-stroke lead (78-82) over Kerfoot after Monday’s action, then the Wildcat shot an 83 to St. John’s 87 to force a tie.

In the first hole of the sudden death playoff, Kerfoot bogeyed to top St. John, who three-putted the hole.

Kerfoot clipped a tree on his approach shot, punched out and then chipped within a foot of the hole to set up the win.

Oak Harbor’s Hunter Adams finished 18th, shooting a 168, three shots from qualifying for state. He carded a solid 81 the second day, passing five opponents, but had “too many strokes to make up,” coach David Smith said. Adams shot 87 Monday.

Steven Timm finished 23rd with a 173 (84-89), and Mason Dieter was 36th at 189 (93-96).

Kerfoot, a junior, placed 46th at state last spring.

The 2014 state tournament is Wednesday and Thursday, May 28 and 29, at the Tri-Mountain Golf Course in Ridgefield.
