Matthew Kelley, an eighth-grader at Oak Harbor Middle School, scored the winning goal for the Northwest United U14 Premier boys team in its 3-2 win over Seattle United Sunday, March 26, at Mount Vernon High School.
The match was the second of four to determine the semifinalists for the USYS Washington State Championship April 28 and 29. Northwest United, which features players from Seattle to Ferndale, plays Crossfire Premier April 2 and WPFC Black April 9.
The team is currently in first place with 18 points.
The state champion will qualify for this summer’s national tournament.
Kelley’s goal came with nine minutes left in the match and a day before his 14th birthday. He also assisted on his team’s second score.
