Kelly Huffer and Olivia Tungate sparkled at the Northwest Region 2013 Short Course Age Group Championships at the King Country Aquatic Center in Federal Way March 22-24.

In other North Whidbey Aquatic Club action, Laura Rosen paced a group of Aquajets at the USA Swimming Speedo Championship Series Western Region Short Course Sectional meet March 13-17 at the King County Aquatic Center.

Huffer, 13, led the seven North Whidbey Aquatic Club members at meet with three wins among five top-three finishes and a new club record.

Tungate, 12, placed in the top five in five events.

Also competing in the meet but not reaching the finals (top eight) were Jerrin Concepcion, 11; Taliah Black, 12; Maira Sulin, 12; Michael Johnson, 14; and Molly Vagt, 14.

Huffer won the 200 butterfly (2:05.99, new NWAC record), 400 individual medley (4:34.98) and 1,650 freestyle (18:00.64). She was third in the 200 IM (2:12) and 100 butterfly (59.73) and sixth in the 200 backstroke (2:10.78).

Tungate’s top finishes were third in the 400 IM (4:51.34) and 200 fly (2:13.75). She was also fourth in the 200 IM (2:19.25) and 200 back (2:14.61) and fifth in the 100 fly (1:01.79).

The meet, which featured the best swimmers from the Northwest region of the United States and Hawaii, wrapped up the short course season for the Aquajets; the long course season begins April 1.

North Whidbey Aquatic Club hosts the triple pentathlon May 3-5.

Joining Rosen at the sectional meet were Emily Huffer, Josh Jepsen and Cole Weinstein.

Rosen posted personal bests in five of her six swims and qualified for two finals.

She clipped an incredible 2.08 off her PR in the 200 butterfly to swim 2:04.97, good for 20th.

Rosen entered the meet as the 64th seed in the 200 individual medley, but finished 27th in 2:08.56.

Coach Steve Witcher said he was “so very proud of this young lady for digging deep into her soul to make things better.”

Rosen also placed 94th in the 200 freestyle (1:55.68) and 110th in the 500 free (5:13.01)

Huffer: 32nd, 200 butterfly, 2:07.32; 38th, 100 backstroke, 57.53; 40th, 200 back, 2:04.36; 45th, 400 IM, 4:33.19.

Jepsen: 72nd, 400 IM, 4:14.5; 80th, 200 breaststroke, 2:15.4; 95th, 100 breast, 1:02.18; 103rd, 50 free, 22.58; 126th, 200 IM, 2:01.35.

Weinstein: 55th, 1,650 free, 16:42.26; 64th, 200 fly, 1:59.28; 70th, 200 breast, 2:14.78; 80th, 400 IM, 4:15.34; 86th, 500 free, 4:49.26; 112th, 100 breast, 1:04.42.

The meet included the best swimmers, including Olympians, from the Western portion of the United States.
