Golfers shanked at state tourney

Oak Harbor’s Anndria Sutter was the lone survivor after the opening round of the Class 4A state golf championships.

Playing in Tuesday’s first round at the Avalon Golf Links in Burlington, Sutter carded an 87 to finish in a tie for 38th place.

Sutter and teammate Brittany Loveng qualified for the state tournament placing eighth and 14th respectively at the WesCo District tournament May 9 and 11 at the Gallery Golf and Country Club.

For the boys, Tuesday’s opening round of the state tournament at Shuksan Golf Club in Bellingham was a big disappointment.

The Oak Harbor team of Phil Reedy, Eric McCardle, A.J. Davis and Josh Whitley were the number-four seeded team from the WesCo District into the state tournament and had a good chance of placing.

Reedy was also the district champion shooting a 36-hole score of 146 and the District 1 number-one seed into the state tournament. He won the district title in a sudden death playoff with Taylor Brown from Snohomish, draining a birdie on the first hole.

However, Reedy and the team had a tough time in the first 18-holes of the tournament Tuesday and failed to make the cut for Wednesday’s final round.

Reedy shot an even par 36 over the first nine holes on the par-72 Shuskan course, but shot 40 over the final nine holes to finish with a four-over-par 76 and miss the cut by one stroke.

Sutter came back in Wednesday’s second round with another 87 to finish tied for 33rd place with a 36-hole total of 174 strokes.

Seo Hee Moon carded a 67-70—137 to win girls medalist honors and lead Kamiak to the team championship.

Kamiak also won the boys team championship and Eastlake’s Kevin Penner was the medalist with a 36-hole total of 137 strokes.
