Ice-cold Coupeville saw its season end Wednesday, Feb. 9, when the Nooksack Valley girls basketball team slid by the Wolves 44-28 in a loser-out game in the sub-district tournament at Mount Vernon High School.

Coupeville, shooting under 20 percent from the field for the game, scored just 10 first-half points and trailed 26-10 at the break. From that point, the teams played even, both scoring 12 points in the third period and six in the fourth.

As well as shutting down the Coupeville shooters, the Pioneers (10-11) also out rebounded the Wolves 35-15.

Coach Jackie Bykonen said the Wolves lost “intensity for one quarter (the second)” and couldn’t recover.

She said, “The girls just did not click,” and added, “Nooksack did not do anything special, we just did not show up to play.”

Although the Wolves lost, Bykonen said, “The returners are already talking about spring ball.”

Cassidi Rosenkrance guided the Wolves with six points. Amanda Manker and Bessie Walstad had four each; Courtney Arnold and Katie Smith scored three apiece; and Taya Boonstra, Jai’Lysa Hoskins, Mehgan Metlow and Kendra O’Keefe scored two each.

The Wolves ended the year 3-18.

In other sub-district action, Lynden Christian defeated Meridian 69-32, and King’s topped Friday Harbor 56-36.
