Girls basketball: Improved effort by Oak Harbor not enough in loss to Royals

Undefeated and eighth-ranked visiting Lynnwood defeated the Oak Harbor girls basketball team 67-37 Friday, Dec. 10.

Undefeated and eighth-ranked visiting Lynnwood defeated the Oak Harbor girls basketball team 67-37 Friday, Dec. 10.

Although the winless Wildcats suffered a 30-point defeat, coach Trisha Clayville was happy with her club’s performance: “It was a vast improvement. I’m thrilled they got to a place were if they played like that against some of the others teams the outcome might have been different. It is very encouraging.”

Clayville said the Wildcats blocked out better, didn’t turn the ball over as much and attacked the basket offensively. She also noted that the post players started working better together, opening up holes for each other and the offense.

Clayville said it wasn’t so much Oak Harbor mistakes but the talent of Lynnwood that produced the big win for the Royals.

Lynnwood (2-0, 5-0) cruised to a 27-8 first quarter lead behind Mokun Fajemisin’s 15 points. “My kids were watching her play a little bit,” Clayville said.

After the first quarter, Fajemisin was slowed by the defense of Jalanie Bobo and foul trouble and finished with 18 points.

Janelle Yoshimoto sparked the Oak Harbor offense. Clayville said the 4-10 point guard went to the hoop early and often, which set up kick-out shots for teammates and got some Lynnwood players in foul trouble.

The Royals led 41-16 at half but only outscored Oak Harbor 26-21 in the second half.

Emilie Renninger led the ‘Cats in one of their best offensive efforts of the season with nine points, one more than Yoshimoto. Annie Leete scored six, Tatiana Cumming and Dominique Jackson had four each, and Bobo and Rayan Russell added three apiece

The Wildcats (0-1, 0-5) go to Shorewood (0-1, 0-3) Wednesday, Dec. 15, and then host Everett (0-1, 3-1) Friday, Dec. 17, at 7:30 p.m.
