Coupeville’s Ian Smith and Oak Harbor’s Josiah Miller dominated the stat sheet for their respective football teams this fall.

Coupeville

Smith, the Wolves’ senior quarterback, led the club in rushing (549 yards on 126 carries, a 4.36 yards per carry average) as well as passing (1,848 yards from 162 completions in 316 attempts). He rushed for five touchdowns and passed for 13; he was intercepted 10 times. Defensively, he snagged four interceptions. All were team highs.

Junior Brandt Bodamer had the most catches (44) for the second most yards (422). Junior Mitch Pelroy led in receiving yardage (776) on the second most catches (43).

Senior Mike Churchill caught 31 passes (276 yards) and junior Dalton Engle 22 (136).

Engle was second in rushing (267 yards on 51 carries). He also led the team in tackles (69). Churchill had 59 tackles and senior Jessie Tucker 56.

Pelroy led the team in scoring (70 points on 11 touchdowns and two 2-point conversions); three of the TD’s came on kickoff returns.

Senior Cody Grassman topped the team in fumble recoveries (2), while Bodamer had a team-best four sacks. Sophomore Luke Pelant and senior Will Hoskins each recorded two sacks.

Oak Harbor

Miller, a junior running back, led the Wildcats in rushing attempts (97), rushing yards (787, an 8.1 average per carry), rushing touchdowns (11), total touchdowns (16), scoring (96), receptions (22), receiving yardage (246), punt returns (15), punt return yardage (357), kickoff returns (14), kickoff return yardage (229), interceptions (6) and forced fumbles (2). He returned five punts for touchdowns.

Miller finished the year with 146 “touches” for 1,619 yards, an average of 10.94 yards per touch.

Mike Washington tied Miller with 22 pass receptions and was second in yardage (239) and first in TD receptions (4).

Matt Burgoyne paced Oak Harbor in passing, connecting on 63 of 132 passes for 681 yards, seven touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Ian Kolste completed 14 of 38 for 132 yards, one TD and two interceptions.

Zack Ayer was second in rushing carries (90) and yards (389). Sam Wolfe carried 35 times for 318 yards and an impressive 9.09 yards per rush. Isaiah Trower (13 carries, 129 yards, 9.92 average) and John Lanningham (43, 214, 4.98) were second to Miller in rushing touchdowns with four each.

Peter Franssen was the only receiver besides Miller and Washington with double-digit receptions (11 for 130 yards and one touchdown).

Defensively, Judd Ford led the team with 74 tackles, three more than Miller.

Aaron Boesch recorded eight sacks and Brent Ryan four; both blocked a punt.

Cody Hernkind topped the ‘Cats with two fumble recoveries, and Justin Counts was second to Miller in interceptions with five.
