Fatigue sinks girls in back-to-back games

"In Burlington Friday, girls play Port Angeles less than 24 hours later. "

“After losing a fast-paced and high-scoring game 81-70 in Burlington Friday, the girls came back home to Oak Harbor and played a fast-paced physical game against Port Angeles less than 24 hours later. Fatigue caught up with the Oak Harbor girls’ team. The Cats scored a little more than half of their point total from the previous night as they lost to the Rough Riders, 69-37. We used our speed on the fast breaks last night, said Marcy Manibusan about the game against Burlington. And our shots were falling which, they definitely were not doing tonight. I mean, last night we made eight three pointers. Last night we had fresh legs under us, said head coach Dwight Lundstrom. They just beat us on the post and at the free-throw line. Now we come back not 24 hours later and have to play another fast-paced physical game and our shooting shows that our legs were not back yet. The girls only mannaged to score six points during the third quarter, four of which came from the line. Oak Harbor came up short when it came to rebounding during the third quarter as they were lost the battle on the boards, 11-4.The Wildcats were blown out during the second half, 34-16, despite hustling for lose balls. We didn’t get into a good flow in this game, said Lundstrom. But we played with some things. I got a few different lineups in there that I had not got yet and they looked better than I expected. The Wildcats continued their trend of starting out slow. The Rough Riders jumped all over the Cats for the first four minutes of the game, grabbing turnover after turnover and taking a 15-1 lead. The Wildcats got a few back before the end of the quarter but Port Angeles took an 11 point lead into the second. That’s kind of been our trait this year, which is unfortunate, said Lundstrom. We spot teams 10, 12 points and then we have to fight our way back into it and we really need to try and break that habit.Oak Harbor made a run at the Rough Riders during the second period after falling behind by 19. Behind three pointers by Manibusan, Valarie Hartman and Amy Phillips, the Wildcats were able to pull back within 13 of Port Angeles but would never get any closer. We gave up second and third shots today and we didn’t box out well, said Lundstrom. But the kids have played two good games in the last two days and I can’t ask much more from them. I think that fatigue just got to them. The leading scorer for the Wildcats was Hartman, who had 11 points. Jessica King had seven points for the Wildcats while Manibusan had six points on two three pointers.Despite being tired the Cats still hustled most of the game and were only outrebounded by 10. Port Angeles is just a really fast team, said Manibusan. They press, and coming into this year we really wanted to be more like them because we aren’t really that tall. But they utilize their speed really well. The Oak Harbor girls, who were fouled 18 times during the game, went 9-for-18 from the line while only fouling thier opponents six times in the entire second half.Oak Harbor will now travel to Shorewood and then return home for a contest against Kamiak on Friday. The most exciting portion of the evening came at half time as Oak Harbor sophomore Mark Villaflor nailed a half-court shot to win free pizza for a year from Papa Murphy’s. The shot was a part of the contest that the pizza resturaunt and the school had put on for the past two seasons to raise money for the school. No one until Villaflor had hit the half-court shot during the past two years and the crowd was stunned when the ball touched nothing but the bottom of the net.Villaflor, a junior varsity player for the Cats’ boys team, also hit a layup and a freethrow to win a free peperoni pizza and a pizza of his choice. “
