After trailing by eight runs to visiting Lakewood Friday, April 15, the Coupeville fastpitch team trimmed the deficit to two runs but couldn’t get any closer in a 10-8 loss.

The Cougars jumped to an 8-0 lead after three innings, then the Wolves, who hadn’t played a game in several weeks because of rainouts, started to shake off the rust and work themselves back into the game.

Coupeville scored four runs in the third to make it 8-4. Lakewood (5-4, 4-4) added another run in the fourth, then the Wolves added two in the fifth and one in the sixth to make it 9-7.

Coupeville out-hit Lakewood 10-6, but the offensive uprising couldn’t overcome the big Cougar lead.

Junior Alexis Trumbull pitched a complete game for the Wolves and struck out seven.

Wolves coach Jackie Calkins said, “Overall, an exciting game. Our team is beginning to show a lot of growth. Our younger players are beginning to adjust well to the speed of high school pitchers and are making better contact with the ball at the plate. Defense was a little tighter this time.”

Offensively, Trumbull went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Freshman Breanna Messner also went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, and freshman Madi Roberts collected two hits. Sydney Aboricio added a double, sophomore Bessie Walstad had a triple and two RBI and freshman Kenzie Kooch drove in two runs.

Coupeville (0-5, 0-4) plays at Archbishop Thomas Murphy (7-1, 7-0) Monday, April 18, and then returns home Wednesday, April 20, with Granite Falls (5-1, 4-1) at 4 p.m.
