Fast start not enough for Wolves / Softball

After a quick start, the Coupeville High School softball team’s offense sputtered, resulting in a 9-5 loss at Cedar Park Christian Monday, April 29.

The Eagles (6-3, 11-4) jumped a half game ahead of the Wolves (5-3, 8-7) in the North Sound Conference with the win.

CPC earned a bit of revenge; Coupeville beat the Eagles 13-2 and 8-4 earlier this season.

The Wolves host league-leading Granite Falls (8-1, 11-5) at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 1.

Cedar Park Christian 9, Coupeville 5

The first three Wolves reached base in the top of the first inning and all scored. From that point, Coupeville scored only two more runs and left six men on base.

In the first, Scout Smith reached first when the Eagle catcher couldn’t corral strike three, Emma Mathusek walked and Chelsea Prescott singled to load the bases. Two errors and a walk to Mackenzie Davis pushed home the three runs.

The Eagles tied the game with three runs in the third inning.

Coupeville regained the lead with a run in the fourth on doubles by Smith and Prescott.

Cedar Park Christian took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

The Wolves plated their final run in the sixth. Smith hit her second double and scored on Prescott’s ground out.

The Eagles responded by scoring their final three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Smith finished with two doubles and three runs, Prescott had a single, double and three RBI, Mathusek singled and Nicole Laxton added a base hit.

All of that could not counter the offensive explosion of CPC’s Sela Flynn, who ripped two home runs and a double and drove in eight runs.

“We came out a little flat and paid for it later,” Coupeville coach Kevin McGranahan said. “We just couldn’t get our big bats going when we needed them.

“They also made two awesome defensive plays that kept rallies from starting.”
