Fall prep teams begin practice for 2011 season

While students revel in their summer break, high-school sports fans impatiently wait for the three-month drought to end.

While students revel in their summer break, high-school sports fans impatiently wait for the three-month drought to end.

That dormant period is nearly over as the Oak Harbor and Coupeville high school fall athletes are gearing up for a new season.

The schools’ football teams initiated the action by beginning turnouts last Wednesday. The other teams jump into practice today, Aug. 22.

The Wildcat football team practices from 8:30 a.m. to 11 each day (except Sunday) as well as 1:30 to 4 p.m. through Wednesday. Oak Harbor hosts Mountlake Terrace Friday, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m.

Coupeville turns out from 4 to 7 p.m. with a scrimmage planned for Friday, Aug. 26, beginning at about 5. The Wolves begin play at Port Townsend Friday, Sept. 2, at 4 p.m.

The Oak Harbor tennis team will practice daily from 3 to 5 p.m.; Tuesday, Aug. 23, the junior varsity meets from 1 to 3 p.m. On Saturday, Aug. 27, the Wildcats go from 10 a.m. until noon. They start the season at Marysville-Getchell Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 3:45 p.m.

The Coupeville tennis team hits the courts 12:30 until 2:30 p.m. this week and from 3 to 5 next week.

The Coupeville volleyball squad will run double practices Monday through Thursday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.; Friday it will meet only in the morning.

The Oak Harbor volleyball club will hold two-a-days Monday through Friday from noon to 3 p.m. and 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday the ‘Cats will meet from 9 a.m. until noon.

Both Coupeville and Oak Harbor open the season at the Oak Harbor Jamboree Saturday, Sept. 3, at 9 a.m.

The Wildcat soccer team will go from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, then from 11 a.m. to 1:30 each day except weekends. A scrimmage is slated for Friday, Sept. 2, at 11 a.m. Oak Harbor travels to Shorecrest Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 7:30 p.m.

The Wolves’ soccer team practices 3 to 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 8 p.m. each day this week. The Red-White scrimmage takes place Thursday, Sept. 1, at 6 p.m. The Wolves head to Concrete Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 5 p.m.

The Oak Harbor cross country team practices from 3 to 5:15 p.m. each day in preparation for the Sehome Invitational Sept. 10 at 10:25 a.m.

The Wildcat swimmers turn out from 12:30 to 2:50 p.m. through Friday and 10:30 to noon on Saturday. The first meet is Monday, Sept. 12, at home with Snohomish and Glacier Peak.
