Frustrations are beginning to mount for the Oak Harbor High School soccer team as it fell 4-0 to Everett Thursday, Sept. 26, at Wildcat Memorial Stadium.

The Seagulls (1-3, 1-4-1) entered the match with zero goals in their first five contests but found its offense against the struggling Wildcats (0-3, 2-3-1).

Oak Harbor has been outscored 14-0 in its three conference matches. Coach Mike Lonborg said he knew the competition would stiffen in league play after a soft nonleague schedule, and said his team needs to be more aggressive to be successful.

The lack of winning 50/50 balls and lack of keeping possession have hurt the Wildcats, he said.

The most frustrating problem, he said, was the mental errors: “We keep making the same mistakes but don’t learn from them. We have smart kids, but they keep making mental mistakes.”

He noted it was a mental error, a hand ball in the goal mouth, that led to Everett’s first score off a penalty kick in the 20th minute.

The Seagulls were able to control the tempo most of the match and peppered the Oak Harbor goal and keeper Makenzie Perry. Perry made several impressive diving stops but couldn’t stop the onslaught.

Everett’s second goal came with 4:45 left in the half when it punched in a rebound off a Perry kick save.

In the 47th minute, the Seagulls scored again on another rebound after a cross, then in the 75th minutes hit from 20 yards out.

Oak Harbor hosts Stanwood (1-2, 1-4) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1.
