After pitching eight shutout innings and striking out 15, what does a pitcher do for an encore? Throw a no-hitter.

Coupeville’s Ben Etzell, after a stellar performance last week against Cedarcrest, fired a no-hitter as the Wolves edged visiting Lakewood 1-0 Monday, April 14.

The win didn’t come easy as Lakewood’s Tim Kolling allowed only one Coupeville base runner (Korbin Korzan was hit by a pitch) over the first four innings.

Aaron Trumbull led off the fifth with the game’s first hit, tomahawking a double past a diving right fielder.

Kurtis Smith pushed Trumbull to third with a grounder to second.

“We executed offensively,” coach Willie Smith said. “Kurtis had a good at bat. He hit to the right side with two strikes and moved the runner along.”

That set up a squeeze bunt by Korzan that plated Trumbull.

Josh Bayne singled in the sixth for Coupeville’s only other hit.

Etzell was tough with eight strikeouts, five coming in the final eight batters. He did, however, run into a few jams with all five of his walks coming in the third and fourth innings.

Etzell was supported by a strong defensive game, especially Morgan Payne at third base, coach Smith said.

“We had a few errors,” Smith said, “but unlike recent games, we solidified our defense after those mistakes.”

Coupeville (4-6, 5-6) goes to Lakewood (3-8, 3-9) at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, and then the schools meet back in Coupeville at 4 p.m. Friday, April 18.
