Coupeville High School’s Ben Etzell tacked on another honor to his celebrated senior baseball season when he was named to the Washington State Baseball Coaches Association all-state team Tuesday, June 24.

Etzell was one of 22 players named to the first team for the combined classifications of 1A, 2B and 1B schools.

Earlier this year, Etzell was named the Most Valuable Player of the Cascade Conference and chosen to play in the senior all-state series.

Etzell said the all-state games in Yakima June 14 and 15 were “an amazing experience.”

“It was fun to be teammates with kids I have played against,” he said. “The talent level was ridiculous. I would say about 90 percent of the 72 kids had already signed to play baseball in college next year. Overall, it was a great opportunity to be a part of.”

Etzell made a sparkling play at third base and collected a hit during his two games.

Etzell will play for St. John’s University in Minnesota next year.

The WSBCA all-state team was filled with players Etzell faced during Coupeville’s run in the playoffs. On the first team were Ben Kelleran and Peter Perkins of Overlake/Bear Creak, Dustin Wilson of Rochester, Taylor Roelofs of Charles Wright/Life Academy and Jamie Heystek of Lynden Christian.

The all-state second team included Matt Kaiser of Overlake/Beak Creak, Dylan Fosnacht of Rochester and Colton Sterba of South Whidbey.
