Ferndale spoiled the christening of the new Oak Harbor High School softball field when it edged the Wildcats 7-5 in extra innings Friday, March 22.

Ferndale (1-4) also spoiled an Oak Harbor comeback. The Wildcats came from four down to knot the game at 4-4 in the fifth inning, but the Golden Eagles pushed across three runs in the top of the eighth to secure the non-conference win.

Oak Harbor hurt itself with errors and walks. Ferndale collected only four hits but used them efficiently.

After a walk in the first, the runner eventually scored on a single.

Two walks followed by a two-run error helped Ferndale score two in the second.

In the fourth, an error, single and error led to the fourth Eagle run.

Then in the eighth, two errors set up Kadence Kane’s three-run home run.

Oak Harbor scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth when Shawna Steele singled, moved to second on Emily Saar’s sacrifice and scored on Kelly Findley’s hit.

The Wildcats tied it with a three-run fifth. Kelsey Rankin singled, then with two outs, scored on Lexie Findley’s triple. Natalie Fiallos followed with a double then scored on an error.

Steele led off the eighth with a double and the next two hitters reached, but the Wildcats’ second comeback attempt was halted by a double play.

Steele finished with three hits and Rankin two.

Tricia Sarns started in the circle for Oak Harbor, then Saar took over in the third and recorded six strikeouts.

Oak Harbor (1-3) hosts Arlington (3-0) in a nonleague game at 4 p.m. Monday, March 25.
