DPSPS offers boating safety course

Registration is open for the virtual America’s Boating Course offered 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays Jan. 16 and 23 by the Deception Pass Sail and Power Squadron.

This boating skills and certification course qualifies participants for the Washington State Boater Education Card, which is required for most boaters.

“This is the most comprehensive introductory boating course available and will give novice boaters the skills needed to enjoy their time on the water and boat with confidence,” squadron commander Pat Waters said in a press release.

“You’ll learn about boating laws and regulations as well as boat registration and licensing,” he added. “(You will) get in-depth knowledge of boating safety equipment and learn how to become a safe boater by learning the do’s and don’ts of boater safety.”

Those who register for the course will receive instructions on how to sign into the Zoom platform.

The cost of registration is $40, and an additional $20 for a spouse or partner sharing course materials.

The course includes a comprehensive introduction to boating, covering boat types, boat engines, boat selection and more.

The class also includes free on-the-water training, which will be dependent on COVID restrictions.
