Twelve Oak Harbor High School wrestlers, seven boys and five girls, qualified for the regional tournament through their efforts at their respective subregional meets last weekend.

Twelve Oak Harbor High School wrestlers, seven boys and five girls, qualified for the regional tournament through their efforts at their respective subregional meets last weekend.

The Wildcat boys finished third in the team standings at the six-team subregional tournament Friday and Saturday, Feb. 7 and 8, at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

The girls placed second, their best finish ever, in their 31-team subregional at Mount Vernon High School, also Friday and Saturday.

Four Oak Harbor boys were crowned subregional champions: Christian Bertram (113 pounds), Jeremy Vester (132), Jahleel Vester (138) and Mark Johnston (152).

Ray Quinday (220) and Jackson Constant (285) placed second and Jacob Dugin (195) nabbed third.
The top three in each weight class qualified for the regional tournament at Seattle’s Nathan Hale High School Saturday, Feb. 15.

Three other Wildcats boys (Kekai Tarrant, 160; Kenny King, 220; and Tyler Adamson, 285) just missed advancing to the regional, placing fourth and earning alternate spots.

Others placing for Oak Harbor were Garrett Stahl (fifth, 103), William Nickelson (sixth, 103), Lucas Nickelson (sixth, 113) and Mike Laningham (sixth, 182).

Ferndale easily won the team title with 369.5 points, Everett had 282, Oak Harbor 258, Marysville-Pilchuck 235.5, Stanwood 207 and Marysville Getchell 117.

The Oak Harbor girls finished second even though they fielded only seven girls over the 12 weight classes.
Mount Vernon won title with 153 points. Oak Harbor edged Lakewood 106.5-98 for second.

To move by Lakewood and secure second place, Oak Harbor needed Deasha O’Brien to defeat her Cougar opponent Saturday morning. O’Brien did so easily, winning 23-7 to wrap up the school-best finish.

Amber Cramsey-Behnke (235) collected the Wildcats’ only individual title. Caitlynn Woodworth (145) placed second, Meredith Bain (170) took third and Tricia Desquitado and O’Brien went 3-4 at 112.

The first four in each division qualified for the regional tournament at Bellingham High School Saturday, Feb. 15.

Isabel Garcia (100) finished fifth and is a regional alternate.

The first four places at both the boys and girls regionals qualify for the state meet Feb. 21 and 22 in Tacoma.
