Cubs reach title game of Andrade Tournament / Little League baseball

The North Whidbey Little League Cubs reached the finals of the Andy Andrade Tournament with an 8-2 win over Anacortes Wednesday, June 6, at Windjammer Park.

The win was the third straight in the tournament for the Cubs; they are the only undefeated team remaining and will play the winner of Anacortes and Sedro-Woolley No. 1 at 6 p.m. Friday, June 8, for the title. The Cubs will have to lose twice not to win the crown.

The second game, if necessary, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The Cubs, coached by Don Jenkins, scored four times in the first inning against Anacortes and played add on from there.

Trevor Sadler, Jacob Figarelle and Tripp Radford all singled in the first inning; Radford’s base hit drove in two runs.

For the game, Ayden Hawkins reached base four times on three walks and a single and scored two runs. Sadler and Kaiden Bucholz also scored twice.

The Cubs finished the game with a strong defensive sixth inning. Centerfielder Jeroam Wood-Pina fired a strike to cut down a runner at third, pitcher Alex Jenkins struck out the next batter for his 13th K, then catcher Figarelle threw behind a runner at second base for a game-ending pickoff.

Jenkins finished with a six-hitter and walked three to go with his 13 strikeouts.
