The Chimacum High School softball team remained — for now —the class of the Olympic League by defeating previously unbeaten Coupeville 15-4 in six innings Wednesday, April 12, on the Wolves’ diamond.

The two-time defending conference champion Cowboys scored multiple runs in five different innings, rapped nine hits and took advantage of seven walks and six Coupeville errors to cruise to the easy win.

“They hit the ball; they were very aggressive,” Coupeville coach Kevin McGranahan said. “We need to hit the ball and button down the errors if we are going to beat them.”

The Wolves and Cowboys play two more times (April 28 and May 8), both in Chimacum, later this season.

Chimacum took the league lead with the win, upping its record to 3-0 (4-1 overall). Coupeville fell to 2-1 (7-1). Klahowya and Port Townsend are 0-2. Each team plays nine league games.

The Wolves have two home non-league games before returning to conference action. Friday Harbor (4-2) visits at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 15, and then LaConner (2-3) follows at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 20.

Chimacum 15, Coupeville 4

After the Cowboys scored three times in the first inning, Coupeville responded with two in the bottom of the second. Mikayla Elfrank reached on an error and scored on Veronica Crownover’s double. Robin Cedillo’s single plated Crownover.

Chimacum upped its lead to 8-2 with five runs in the third. The Wolves got two back in at the bottom half of the inning. Katrina McGranahan walked and Sarah Wright boarded on an error; both scored on Elfrank’s double.

From there, Chimacum pulled away.

McGranahan was tagged with the pitching loss; she struck out seven and issued only four earned runs.

Crownover led the offense with a single and double. Elfrank added a double, and Jae LeVine, Hope Lodell, McGranahan and Cedillo all singled.
