Coupeville’s season comes to an end / Cross country

Coupeville’s first official cross country season in 20 years came to a close at the Bi-District meet Saturday, Oct. 27, at South Whidbey High School.

No Wolves qualified for the state meet, which is Nov. 2 at Pasco’s Sun Willows Golf Course.

Senior Danny Conlisk posted Coupeville’s best finish, taking 39th out of 102 in the 1A boys race on the 5,000-meter course in 18:11.02.

Granite Falls’ Isaac Cortes won in 16:37.27.

The top 35 individuals qualified for state.

Conlisk, who trained with South Whidbey the past two years before Coupeville re-instated the sport this fall, qualified for state last year while running in District 3, the Wolves’ former home in the Olympic League.

His time Saturday was 47 second better than his previous best on the South Whidbey course.

Coupeville returned to District 1 this year. The Bi-District Championships also included

District 2 and featured five boys teams ranked in the state top-10 poll.

As a team, the Coupeville boys placed 14th with 391 points. Meridian won the title with 72. The top five teams earned trips to state.

Also running for the Coupeville boys were sophomore Sam Wynn (81st, 20:28.09), sophomore TJ Rickner (93rd, 21:28:48), senior Uriah Kastner (98th, 23:10.12) and senior Kyle Burnett (100th, 24:46.2).

Freshman Alana Mihill was the lone Coupeville female participant, placing 74th out of 96 in 24:36.15, a PR for the course.

Naomi Smith of King’s won the girls race in 18:16.05, leading the Knights to the team title.

“They put it all out there today against a very strong district,” Coupeville coach Natasha Bamberger said. “I am very proud of their effort today and for their first season as a cross country team for Coupeville. The team told me they don’t want the season to end.

“I know what I can improve on as coach, and we are all looking forward to off-season cross training and building a good base for their track and the 2019 cross country seasons.”
