The season could be a roller-coaster ride for the Coupeville High School baseball team.

The Wolves, who were near perfect in a 10-0 win over Blaine Saturday in the season opener, lost 6-0 to visiting Sultan Monday, March 16.

“As good as we played Saturday, we played bad today,” Coupeville coach Willie Smith said.

He conceded up-and-down play is common among young teams; most of the Wolves’ lineup is new this spring.

“Fortunately we have 11 nonleague games to get things straightened out.”

Tyler Ohlson, a soft-throwing left-hander with a nice curve ball, tossed a three-hit shutout for Sultan, striking out four.

“It was the first time we faced a thumber, and we didn’t make the necessary adjustments,” Smith said.

The Turks scored single runs off Coupeville starter C.J. Smith in each of the first two innings on only one hit.

Sultan tacked on two more runs in the fifth.

Freshman Julian Welling relieved C.J. Smith in the inning and limited the damage by striking out the side.

Sultan finished the scoring with 2 two-out runs in the seventh.

The Wolves never threatened until the sixth when they got their first two runners aboard. Cole Payne reached on an error and Jake Hoagland ripped a pinch-hit single, but the pair were left stranded with three consecutive outs.

Kyle Bodamer collected the Wolves’ only two other hits, including a leadoff double in the seventh.

The Wolves (1-1) now play at Sequim (0-0), coach Smith’s home town, at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 18.
