Coupeville sets two school records as Wolves and Wildcats compete at state meet / Track

Two school records highlighted the efforts of the Coupeville and Oak Harbor High School track athletes at the state meets Thursday through Saturday, May 25-27.

Coupeville

Senior Mitchell Carroll and junior Jacob Smith set new schools records to pace Coupeville at the 1A state track meet at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.

Carroll sailed to third in the long jump (20-05.25) and fifth in the triple jump (43-11.75). His mark in the triple jump surpassed his school record of 43-03 set last week.

Carroll placed 15th in the triple jump at state last year.

Smith sprinted to third in 200 in 22.41, a tenth of a second quicker than his previous school record. He was also 10th in the 100 (11.36). Each finish was one spot better than his efforts in last spring’s state meet.

Carroll and Smith ran on the 12th-place 4×400 relay team (3:36.71) with sophomore Danny Conlisk and junior Henry Wynn. Smith, Conlisk and Wynn were on last spring’s team that took 15th at state.

Conlisk added a fifth place in the 400 (50.59) and a 12th in the 800 (2:07.17). He finished 17th in the 800 in 2016.

Ariah Bepler claimed ninth in the high jump with a leap of 5-10.

As a team, the Coupeville boys placed 19th with 14 points. King’s took the title with 67.

The 4×200 relay team of senior Lauren Grove, sophomore Lindsey Roberts and freshmen Maya Toomey-Stout and Mallory Kortuem recorded the Coupeville girls best finish. The quartet placed fifth (1:46.58).

They also took ninth in the 4×100 (51.04).

Grove and Roberts finished third in the 4×200 and sixth in the 4×100 last year.

Toomey-Stout added 13th in both the 100 (12.97) and 200 (27.07).

It was tough-luck meet for Roberts. Besides competing while ill, she hit a hurdle in the 100 hurdles and finished 18th (17.0). She placed fourth last year.

Junior Lauren Bayne was 13th in the high jump (4-08).

The Wolves finished 33rd as a team with 4 points. Lakeside claimed the crown with 51.
