Taking a huge step toward securing a postseason berth, the Coupeville High School soccer team trimmed host Chimacum 3-1 in a shootout for a 1-0 win Thursday, Oct. 23.

With the victory, Coupeville (2-1, 5-4) now sits in second place, two games over Chimacum (1-3, 2-10) and two and a half in front of Port Townsend (0-3, 1-10) with three matches left. The top three teams advance to the district playoffs.

The Wolves take on first-place Klahowya (4-0, 12-1) at 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, and then face Port Townsend twice later in the week.  Tuesday, the Wolves meet the Redhawks in Port Townsend before finishing out the regular season at home at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30.

Coupeville clubbed Chimacum 6-0 last week, but Thursday’s match was a much different affair.

This time, the Cowboy defense held the Wolves in check as the two teams battled through a scoreless regulation and overtime.

The match was then decided on penalty kicks. Micky LeVine, Ana Luvera and Marissa Etzell scored for Coupeville while Wolves’ keeper Julia Myers limited the Cowboys to one successful kick.

“I am very proud of these ladies, regardless of their record,” coach Troy Cowan said. “It’s their heart and never-die attitude that makes me proud to coach them on the pitch.”
