Coupeville JV team finishes season undefeated

The future of Coupeville football looks extremely good

“The success of the varsity football team for Coupeville has been a bright spot for the school this year. But the future of Coupeville football looks extremely good as well. The Wolves junior varsity football team completed an undefeated season with their seventh win one week ago. Coaches Jason Meyers and Randy Dickson lead the squad this season and are extremely proud of what the team accomplished this year and how far their kids have come.Last year they were a pretty good team, I think 5-2, so we had a good crew coming back and we got the job done, said Meyers.Meyers admits that the team learned the most during their last three games because the scores were close. The close games showed that the team has the ability to play both in games where the team has a big lead and in games were they have had to battle. One game that Meyers points to as a catalyst for the success of the squad was a game early in the year.In the second game of the season we were playing Kings, an excellent team, said Meyers. It was a close game. To play against a team like that and come out with a win, it sparked our confidence. Another pivotal game that Meyers points to was a contest against Sequim. The first time that the two teams met, Coupeville had rolled over Sequim, but the second meeting was not as easy. According to Meyers, the team was cocky in the second meeting and got down early, 14-0, but showed that they could overcome there mistakes in the second half. The Wolves came out and scored a touchdown to pull within eight. With only a minute left in the game Coupeville was able to overcome the adversity and score twice in the final 50 seconds. It really showed me what this team had, said Meyers. When they were down they came out in the second half and showed exactly what they were all about. Some of the notable players for the junior varsity squad this season that really improved, according to Meyers, includes quarterback Brad Sherman, running back and wide receiver Brian Fakkema and running back J.D. Meyers. The coach admits that cutting it down to just a few players is not fair because the entire team improved. It was a team effort, said Meyers. But the front line contributed to the success of those three guys.Meyers said that the offensive line was one of the biggest reasons for the teams’ success as well.Meyers knows that this is a learning experience for this squad. It was just the basics, said Meyers. Then you can start playing with things when you get to the varsity level. With the varsity squad losing only five seniors next season, hopes are high in Coupeville that this season’s junior varsity record is only an omen of things to come. “
