Coupeville grad competes at Olympic trials

Kyle King, a 2008 Coupeville High School graduate, finished 47th in the United States Olympic marathon trials Saturday, Feb. 29, in Atlanta.

The top three finishers —- Galen Rupp, Jacob Riley and Abdi Abdiahman — earned spots on the 2020 USA team heading to the Tokyo Olympics in July. Riley is a graduate of Bellingham’s Sehome High School.

King snared one of the 222 spots in the trials with a qualifying time of 2:18:04 at the Eugene Marathon last April.

King, a captain in the Marine Corps, ran collegiately for Eastern Washington University and the University of Oklahoma.

He was eighth in the marathon, the best finish by an American, at the Military World Games last October in China.

While attending Coupeville High School, where he was coached by his father Randy King, Kyle King won six state titles, including winning the 3,200 meters three consecutive years.
