The Coupeville High School football team warmed up for the coming season by taking part in a three-team jamboree in La Conner Friday, Aug. 29.

Coupeville, Burlington and La Conner each ran a dozen plays on both offense and defense against each opponent.

The Wolves gave up one score against Burlington-Edison but thwarted another when Josh Bayne picked off a pass and returned it 50 yards.

Against LaConner, the Coupeville defense surrendered a touchdown, and then the offense stung the Braves for three long scores.

On the first offensive play, quarterback Joel Walstad connected with Bayne for a 60-yard touchdown. Two plays later, the pair hooked up again, this time for a 55-yard score.

Gabe Wynn slipped through the La Conner defense for a 25-yard scoring run on the jamboree’s final play.

“I think we did well with our numbers,” coach Tony Maggio said. “Kids played hard, gave good effort. We were definitely outsized versus Burlington, but I thought we rallied hard and made them use a lot of plays to score on us. We had a good pic and runback and a couple fourth down stops.”

“We will be ready for South Whidbey on Friday,” he added.

Coupeville begins the regular season by hosting the Falcons at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, in a nonleague game.
