The Coupeville High School girls basketball team sprinted to a 29-3 lead on the way to thumping visiting Chimacum 63-29 Wednesday, Jan. 21.

After the first of three rounds of Olympic League games, the Wolves sit in first place with a 3-0 record (9-5 overall). Chimacum is now 1-2 (2-10).

Coupeville will look to pad its conference lead with it travels to winless Port Townsend (0-3, 0-13) at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23.

Chimacum, down 29-3, didn’t score its first field goal until nearly three minutes into the second quarter.

Coupeville ended the first period on a 18-0 run to go ahead 23-2.

Julia Myers, who finished the game with a season-high 21 points, got the Wolves going with seven first-quarter points; Madeline Strasburg chipped in for six.

Six points from both Myers and Makana Stone helped the Wolves keep rolling in the second quarter as they led 38-9 at halftime.

The Cowboys failed to put a dent in the lead after the break.

Hailey Hammer led six Coupeville scorers in the third quarter with four points, and the Wolves took a 50-17 lead into the last period.

The only Coupeville players not to play in all four quarters was Kailey Kellner, who was eligible for only one after appearing in three in the junior varsity game.

Eight of the 10 who played scored. Following Myers was Stone with 14.

Hammer and Strasburg finished with eight points, Kacie Kiel four, Mia Littlejohn three, Wynter Thorne three and Monica Vidoni two.

Stone registered another double-double, snaring 15 rebounds (eight on offense).

Hammer had six boards, and Myers, Thorne and Vidoni grabbed five each.

In all, Coupeville out-rebounded Chimacum 45-19.

Hammer added four assists and Stone three, and Vidoni recorded three blocks.
