Powerful Charles Wright Academy stopped the Coupeville High School tennis team 4-1 Saturday, April 11, at University Place.
“Despite the 4-1 score, I was pleased with the results,” coach Ken Stange said. “CWA is one of the premier 1A programs in area. Our players took full advantage of the chance to play against some quality players. Our record is now 1-3, but I’m still happy with the level of effort and improvement shown by the players.”
Coupeville earned its point against Charles Wright in second doubles where McKenzie Bailey and Wynter Thorne won 6-2, 6-4.
“The best part about this match was watching them figure out how to make subtle adjustments as the match went along,” Stange said. “Each time the other team took some advice from the coach, McFlurry (Bailey) would keep applying pressure. Their efforts netted them Players of the Match honors.”
Jacki Ginnings dropped the first singles match 6-0, 6-1; and Valen Trujillo fell in second singles 3-6, 6-3, 10-8.
“Jacki hung in there,” Stange said, against Alexis Schorno, who plays tournament tennis year-round.
“Jacki took quite a few games to deuce; she definitely stood her ground.”
Stange called Trujillo’s match a “classic battle” of high “intensity.”
Payton Aparicio and Sage Renninger lost 6-1, 6-1 in first doubles.
“Sage and Payton played well, and the experience of playing against a pair of seasoned club players will provide future benefits,” Stange said. “My frosh were tough customers, though. They stayed aggressive, refusing to back down.”
Sydney Autio and Micky LeVine were edged 7-5, 7-5 in third doubles.
“Sydney and Micky were dynamic,” Stange said. “Sydney knocks the fuzz off the ball, while Micky has the reflexes of a hockey goaltender. They could be a potent duo.”
McKenzie Meyer and Renninger picked up an 8-4 win in a JV double match.
