Coupeville High School football players were introduced to new coach Jay Silver’s brand of play last week during the Wolves spring camp June 17 through 19.
Silver said 45 players participated in the camp and was pleased with the turnout in spite of “the lack of time being able to put it together.”
Silver, who is replacing long-time coach Ron Bagby, said the camp gave the players a feel for how he will run his program and a look at their new offense.
He said it was “also a good time for me to evaluate some of the players to see what I will be working with next season. I was very pleased with what we were able to accomplish and with the effort by the kids. This small camp was a great stepping stone for what we will be doing next fall.”
Silver said it was “great” to finally meet the kids, and, after the initial awkwardness of working with each other for the first time, the players were “eager to learn” and were “really trying to focus on the details that it will take to be successful.” He added that the group was “pretty hard working.”
The strength of the team will be at the skill positions, according to Silver. “We have a very athletic QB (Ian Smith) that can throw and run the ball very well. Our running back (Dalton Engle) is very good. Then we have some kids at wide receiver that should have a very good season. Mitch Pelroy looks really good.”
He is concerned about the inexperience of the offensive line. He said the group is “going to have to come together fast for us to be any good.”
