Not only did the Coupeville High School girls basketball team knock off rival South Whidbey 48-38 Tuesday, Jan. 28, it essentially locked up a postseason berth in process.

The Wolves evened their season record to 8-8 by adding another win Wednesday, tripping visiting Friday Harbor 40-34 in a nonleague game.

By defeating South Whidbey, Coupeville (4-6, 8-8) holds a three-game lead with four left over the Falcons (1-9, 2-14) for the final 1A district berth.

Coach David King said his team “came out flat” at South Whidbey with “no energy on defense.” He added that his team did “move the ball well on offense but the shots wouldn’t fall.”

The result was a narrow lead after the first quarter, 11-8, and a deficit, 20-18, at halftime.

South Whidbey upped the margin by one, 33-30, after three periods.

The Wolves “picked up their defense” at that time, King said, and the game swung in their favor as Coupeville held the Falcons to only five points in the final period.

Amanda Fabrizi scored seven points and Bree Messner and Makana Stone four each in the fourth quarter to spark the comeback.

The Wolves hit just 6 of 14 free throws in the last period and 9 of 24 for the game.

South Whidbey attempted only eight in the game, making five.

Fabrizi, Messner and Stone each scored 10 points, Maddi Strasburg had eight, Julia Myers six and Kacie Kiel four.

Madi Boyd led the Falcons with 11 points.

Coupeville built a big lead against Friday Harbor, then withstood the Wolverines’ 12-1 run at the end of the game.

Kiel scored six points in the first quarter and the Wolves led 10-9. At that point Coupeville steadily pulled away.

Strasburg scored five points in the second quarter, the Wolves held Friday Harbor to only three and Coupeville went ahead 21-12.

Behind five points from Fabrizi, the Wolves stretched their lead to 17, 32-16, late in the third quarter and led 35-20 going into the fourth period.

King substituted liberally throughout the game and all 10 players appeared in at least two quarters.

Again the Wolves had balanced scoring as Fabrizi and Kiel finished with 10 points and Strasburg nine.

Stone added five; and Messner, McKayla Bailey and Carlie Rosenkrance added two each.

Hayden Mayer, who played in only the second half, scored 10 points to lead the Wolverines.

Coupeville (4-6, 8-8) greets Sultan (4-6, 5-11) at 6:45 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31.
