Coupeville collects crucial win / Soccer

Getting a critical win in its effort to secure a postseason berth, the Coupeville High School soccer team nipped Sultan 1-0 Tuesday, Oct. 15, at Mickey Clark Field.

The win, Coupeville’s first this season, lifted the Wolves (1-6, 1-9-2) into a fifth-place tie with Sultan (1-6, 1-10-2) in the North Sound Conference. The top five move on to the playoffs.

Each teams plays three more league matches, but if Coupeville and Sultan finish the season tied for fifth, they will meet in Coupeville at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, to break the tie.

Tuesday’s victory over Sultan was “a nice win for us — well deserved,” Coupeville coach Kyle Nelson said. “We definitely pushed the game, outshooting them about 15 to 1. They have an excellent goalie, so it took us a lot of shots to finally get one past her.”

Mallory Kortuem did the honors for the Wolves, punching in the match’s lone goal midway through the second half.

Coupeville travels to Cedar Park Christian (3-4, 6-5) for a 6 p.m. match Thursday, Oct. 17.
