On Friday, Jan. 30, during the Coupeville boys and girls basketball games against King’s High School, the Wolves’ coaching staff, along with many districts in the state, will be wearing special shirts in recognition of Coaches vs. Cancer.

The school will be taking donations during the games. Proceeds will be sent to the American Cancer Society.

Fans are invited to join the Wolves’ players and coaches as they join together to help raise awareness and money for the American Cancer Society.

Coaches vs. Cancer began at the college level in 1993.

In 2008, nearly 200 college and high school coaches participated in the program. It is intended to raise money for, and raise awareness of, cancer in our communities.

Last year, Washington high school coaches in the SPSL, Narrows and Nisqually Leagues raised $50,000 for the cause.

This season, the weekend of Jan. 29 and 30 has been designated as Coaches vs. Cancer Weekend statewide.

This year, the Cascade Conference and the Northwest Conference have joined the cause.

Before each league wrestling match Jan. 29 and each basketball game Jan. 30, each coach at a participating school will select an “honorary coach” to sit on the bench with members of the team.

The honorary coach selected may be a person who has suffered from cancer or is a relative of someone who has died. The seat may also just remain empty for the game in memory of a cancer victim.

Prior to the game, each coach will introduce the honoray coach and make a brief remark regarding the Coaches vs. Cancer program.

Donations collected from the crowd at the Coupeville games will be sent to Archbishop Murphy High School.

The total amount of funds donated will then be sent to the American Cancer Society.

Donations will not be publicity compared to other Cascade Conference schools; instead, the total amount the league collected will be included in a press release for the local media.

The CvC program is sponsored nationwide by the American Cancer Society.
